Opening of consolidated Powertech Batteries distribution centre in Elandsfontein

Released: 17th February 2012

Power Technologies (Pty) Ltd (Powertech), a wholly owned subsidiary of the JSE-listed Allied Electronics Group (Altron), today launched its new distribution centre for the Powertech Batteries Division. The state of the art facility is located at 140 North Reef Road in Elandsfontein, Ekurhuleni.

Robert Venter, CEO Altron, officially cut the ribbon at an opening function for Powertech Batteries’ customers and suppliers.

The warehouse floor space measures 8,300 m2 and accommodates automotive batteries, industrial batteries, Battery Technologies’ rectifiers and UPS’s, Rentech’s solar products as well as a selection of Enersys Powertech’s industrial products. A total of 3320 pallet spaces are currently available, with ample room for future expansion.

After a construction period of seven months, the move was done at the end of 2011 over a period of only three days, which resulted in a minimum disruption within the business.

Glenn Geldenhuis, CEO Powertech Batteries, says “By consolidating our distribution centres from various locations in Ophirton, Greenhills and Pretoria into the Elandsfontein facility, we created a centre of excellence with the space to house all our products and Gauteng operations under a single roof. Through improved supply chain systems and workflow, we can offer our customers an improved level of service.”

During the construction of the distribution centre, the environmental impact was taken into account where the lighting has been equipped with sensor switches to reduce electricity consumption. The facility also has a separate store room for NiCad batteries, which require special storage conditions, with built-in extraction equipment.

From the Elandsfontein distribution centre deliveries are made to Gauteng, Limpopo, North West Province and Mpumalanga, covering some 956,000 square kilometres. The centre also serves as a hub for exports into Sub-Saharan Africa.

Powertech Batteries takes pride in the fact that the new distribution centre has already achieved ISO 140001 and ISO 18001 certification, and should also receive its ISO 9001 Quality Listing in the near future.

This facility is yet another milestone in Powertech’s strategy of continuously improving on its costs, efficiencies and services. It also highlights Powertech Batteries’ commitment to serve the local industry and protect the environment with the growing trend in battery usage within South Africa.
