Optical Fiber Characterization Service

TIS’s Fiber Characterization Service verifies the integrity and capacity of the Customer’s fibers through a suite of measurements, including:

  • Bi-directional Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) testing at 1310nm, 1550nm and 1625nm: Calculates the attenuation of the link, the characteristics of the loss and the length of the fiber span
  • OLTS (Optical Loss Test): Measures the loss by injecting a known amount of light into one end of the fiber and measuring how much light coms out the other end
  • Chromatic Dispersion (CD) testing
  • Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) testing
  • Upon completion, TIS provides Customer with complete test results, including the test gear setup parameters.

The TIS Fiber Characterization Service includes the following Services:

  • Scope and clean all accessible optical ferrules and bulkheads involved in the connection path. Re-scope and re-clean as needed to acquire an adequate connection path
  • Perform bi-directional tests with an OTDR. OTDR shall have a 1000m load box on the launch point. All testing will be performed from the end of the fiber jumpers that connect to the equipment at each location. At no time will personnel connect to any common fiber plant equipment outside of a Customer approved maintenance window
  • Perform each set of tests as set forth in the Fiber Characterization Specification for each span; two fibers per span
  • Provide electronic and hard copies of testing documentation. This documentation should include test gear setup parameters needed to duplicate the tests with the same test equipment
  • Identify and assign a dedicated TIS Program Manager as the single point of contact for all project logistics, schedules and technical issues related to this service
